Yesterday was April Fool's and we were never less excited
Obviously, because if it were somehow revealed that this whole thing was a joke we would all agree it was a really mean joke. But it is not a joke, so instead it’s just really mean.
For my part I’ve never been much of a prankster because I can’t stand the part where they don’t know it’s a joke. I’ve been known to apologize for a joke as soon as I told it. Roughly a month ago I told someone that the company we work for makes dog toys on the side. She believed me and I could not stand it.
Despite this, I have told some reprehensible lies. I’ve also told some pretty benign lies, as well as lies by exaggeration and lies by omission. Most of the time with those there is no part where the person doesn’t know it’s a joke, because it isn’t a joke, and the goal is that they never know. This isn’t to say I’m a good liar. I am distinctly not a good liar.
I’ve heard it argued that in some cases a lie is ethical because “what good would the truth do? You’re really just telling it for your own sake”. But I’ve heard Nancy counter that it’s really not up to the liar to decide whether or not the lie-ee deserves the truth. The lie-ee deserves to have accurate information about things that pertain to their life, and if you have that information you should probably tell them.
Anyway the point is that this isn’t really funny, and so yesterday most companies decided it would be in poor taste to pretend that they had created a new goat-based gaming console. The goat-based gaming console reality is probably better than this one, though.
